We learn that he spoils her and really takes care of her. He asks Trina if she wants to hang out, and she makes a quick joke about kissing in his basement. Oh, snap! But then she starts cracking up.
Ugh, such a cruel joke. Mark totally has a crush on her, too. Then all the sudden the lights in the subtrans go out, and it loses all power and slows. This is very odd, as the power underground has never gone out in Mark's lifetime.
He pulls out his palmphone future cell-phone , but there is no service. The subtrans comes to a stop, and people start rushing out of it like rats. In a minute or two, Trina and Mark are the only ones left. They exit the train and see that the people all went to the left.
Trina wants to go the opposite way because the people who ran to the left seemed odd. Like they were a mob. Trina and Mark head right, and about ten minutes into their trek they hear screams up ahead.
But not just normal screams-screams of pure terror. Trina, being the brave soul she is, shouts that they need to help. Mark wants to run away, but to seem brave as well he follows her. When they reach a wide platform of the substation, Mark sees a scene too horrific for him to even understand. Bodies are on the floor, naked and burned.
People are screaming and limping around with their clothes on fire, their faces half-melted, and blood is everywhere. Also, a huge rush of heat pulses through the air, making them feel like they are in an oven.
Mark imagines his parents and his sister burning somewhere, and his heart breaks. Chapter 9 Alec is screaming at Mark to wake up. Thank goodness, we don not want to see any more of that memory. Mark's head hurts a whole lot, and they are sitting in a clearing surrounded by trees.
The Berg is crashed in between two oak trees. Mark asks what happened, and Alec's response sums it up perfectly: We crashed and I dragged your butt out here. Then I sat here and watched you roll around like you were having a bad dream". Alec says they need to search the Berg for whatever they can find; he already searched a little, and luckily the boxes with the darts were still closed and did not spill.
Thirty minutes later they are both inside the Berg searching; they strike gold and find a fully functioning workpad, which is pretty much the future version of an iPad. They bring the workpad outside, but all they find is games, books, old programs, etc. Alec then finds the GPS app—though the satellites in the sky had been destroyed from the sun- flares, the app still has logs of where the Berg had gone. They surmise that the headquarters of where the Berg was heading is about sixty miles away.
They need to go there, but first they need to get back home to find their friends. After camping in the woods for two nights, they finally reach the village. They are about a mile away when the stench of death hits them like a sudden heat wave. Chapter 10 As they walk toward the village, Alec reminds Mark that they need to be on the same page. They cannot let their emotions get the best of them.
Yarg, spoken like a hardened soldier. Also, the main goal is to protect themselves first, as selfish as that may sound. Mark plays the sentimental card, saying it is inhumane to just ignore people who might be dying. But he eventually realizes Alec is totally right, so he agrees to be careful.
They make their way into the village, and inside there are tons of bodies. Like, everywhere.
Someone had stored most of them in the Leaner, a large wooden structure meant to protect them from rainstorms. A quick scan of the bodies proves that Darnell is not one of them. While walking through the center of the village, Alec starts shouting for people to help them.
Someone inside a boarded up building tells them that everyone has been inside since the Berg left so that they do not get sick. So yeah, the darts are poisonous and killed most of the people. Footsteps are heard and they spot Trina.
She rushes to Mark to hug him, but Alec stops her because they need to be careful.
Reluctantly, she obeys. As they follow Trina, they hear screaming: Chapter 11 Turns out that it is Darnell who is locked up in a hut. His screams are animalistic, and he was the one who told everyone to lock him up. Mark approaches the hut, and Darnell is screaming, "My head! He keeps screaming this, then whimpering it. Mark tries to console him, but then Darnell's body stiffens.
He screams once more, worse than anything he has ever screamed, and then he starts bashing his body most likely his head against the door. He keeps doing it, and eventually he bashes it enough that his body slumps on the floor, dead. Chapter 12 Trina tries to embrace Mark, but Alec separates them. Trina expresses that she is pretty sick of living after seeing that.
She then tells them that she boarded Darnell up, but she does not think she is sick because the disease was very fast- working and she feels fine. Alec cannot help but agree; they need to gather supplies and then get out of the village.
They find Misty and the Toad, then they head out to the wilderness. Out there, they find Lana by a stream. She claims she is not sick, and that most of the people died within twelve hours besides Darnell.
Just as they are all about to take off, Misty groans. She is pale and collapses to one knee. Her head hurts. Ahhhh, now we are seeing a pattern here. If your head hurts, that is not good.
Chapter 13 Lana is quick to shout out orders: Misty agrees, and tells everyone to do what Lana says. The Toad has a tough time leaving; apparently Misty is his closest friend. They give Misty an hour, hoping that she might improve. But when they return, she is about the same. Start on. Show related SlideShares at end. WordPress Shortcode. Afterward, floods, food shortages, and continued devastating heat, along with individuals bent on surviving at all costs, have made his chances pretty bleak. Against all odds, he and a close-knit group of other survivors move inland and set up a community together. But before long, a flying ship brings something wholly unfamiliar: Mark's friends all work together to figure out what this illness is, how it spreads, and why it drives people mad, while trying to hold onto hope for themselves and save others.
A prequel to the "Maze Runner" series Delacorte , this story does indeed show how the world started to fall apart prior to Thomas's time in the Maze. However, Thomas's and Teresa's stories are contained to the prologue and epilogue, so readers hoping for information about how WICKED began will be disappointed.
