Years later, FitzPatrick entertained his children with stories of his youthful adventures, and was persuaded by his friend Rudyard Kipling to collect them into a book. Jock is a dog. He is the object of this story of South Africa which covers about ten years in the latter part of the 19th Century. It is an engaging tale which gives a feel for the times through the eyes of a teamster or transportation worker. It is loosely based on the adventures of its author Percy Fitzpatrick as he traveled ox team wagons throughout central South Africa or the Bushveld. Bushveld is an Afrikaner word which would be the South African equivalent of the Australian "Outback".
Jock was the runt of the litter when Percy got him but he grew to become a formidable dog and loyal companion.
It is good book to obtain a feel for attitudes and cultural norms of the day. There is an interesting Zulu character in the second half of the story. Since it is based on a true story it is not fanciful like the Quartemain stories.
I liked the book and I would have given it five stars but I thought that the first chapter was weak in that it concentrated on the hardships of Percy and that Jock was a long time in being introduced into the story.
The last chapter was sad and in some ways disappointing, but such is life. Overall I recommend this book for a general adventure book. It was written for children but can be appreciated by anyone who enjoys such tales.

I don't know how I missed this when ordering, I recall looking through the descriptions, etc. This is a copy of the original book, made by General Books [ It admits that there may be footnotes in the text, typos and other issues. All of that is true. The list of illustrations are blended in with the text, there are no chapters. Quotation marks and apostrophes are almost randomly inserted, making it hard to distinguish speech attributed to one of the characters and speech patterns.
There are no chapters. If you are a scholar, you can make excuses for this and spend time to decipher the book.
If you are buying this book for a child wishing to read the story of "Jock of the Bushveld," then you should not buy this book, kids can't parse this book and it is a meaningless jumble of text. I believe that even an adult may find it hard to read this for enjoyment. This is a story of a dog told by his owner in South Africa in the time when goods were transported by oxen and wagons.
Jock's master is a transporter--oxen train operator- and they travel through the bushveld hunting to supplement their food along the route.
I enjoyed the description of the various wild animals and terrain.
Jock is a loyal companion and always ready to hunt and defend his master. The whole book is tinged with sadness for me because the narrator is talking about their experiences in the past tense.
You know that Jock is no longer with us. Maybe because I have an older dog, I kept wondering if this will be the chapter where Jock gets killed. This book took me to a place and time I never even imagined. I don't regret that I spent my time reading it.
It has a glossary for the many Dutch and African words sprinkled in the text. This book was one the 5 best books about dogs suggested by an article in the Wall Street Journal. Paperback Verified Purchase.
NOT a copy of the original! I have a copy printed in ,the seventh impression. He even followed him home without any coaching. This was the start of many a great adventure. The odd little puppy grew into a great and fearless dog. He was well liked, well respected and well behaved. However, it was only when FitzPatrick had made his fortune, settled down to have a family and become an established and well-respected member of society that he took pen to paper at the urging of his children and shared these delightful tales with the rest of the world.
FitzPatrick gave Jock to a friend until he had a safer place for him to live in the town, where with his deafness, he was unsafe from traffic and people. The friend, Ted, loaned Jock to a store-owner Tom Barnett, who was having trouble with thieves and kraal dogs.
FitzPatrick later recounted these adventures as bedtime stories to his four children. Jock of the Bushveld was first published in and had an extremely warm reception, being reprinted four times in that year alone. Since then it has achieved the status of a classic South African book and has been also widely read abroad — more than one hundred editions have been printed and it has been translated into Afrikaans , Dutch, French, Xhosa and Zulu , amongst others.
A widely available 'modernised' South African edition published by AD Donker Publishers, according to its editor Linda Rosenberg, has been cleansed of its 'prejudicial racial references', while 'the esoteric charm and innocent philosophical tone have been left scrupulously intact'. Jock permanently lost his hearing when a kudu antelope cow kicked him.
When Fitzpatrick went to live in Barberton, he realised Jock was miserable living in a town and gave the dog to his friend Tom Barnett, who ran a supply store in what became Mozambique. One night when Tom Barnett called him, he mistakenly shot Jock, because he was thought to be the dog killing chickens on the farm when Jock had meanwhile already killed the other intruding dog.
It is classified as Aarne—Thompson type A. Niven claimed to have located the area of the grave and stated the coordinates as: Another fictional movie with an ending that was more palatable to this audience was therefore released in At the end of Duncan MacNeillie together with a small team of animators moved from Nelspruit to Johannesburg to start production on Jock of the Bushveld.
