This way, writers learn by example, instead of having to take the author's word for it. Author Carson Reeves began as a screenwriter himself, yet struggled to figure out the elusive formula for writing a successful screenplay.

Then, about seven years ago, he started getting his hands on spec sale scripts and reading them. Within weeks, he'd learned more about screenwriting than he had in the past seven years combined. He then turned his attention from writing to helping others write. This was the genesis behind the Scriptshadow website - a way to teach screenwriting through reading professional screenplays.

The site blew up but quickly became controversial, due to Reeves breaking down material that Hollywood considered private. As such, the site's become a "love it or hate it" fixture in both Hollywood and the screenwriting community. Still, the site has tens of thousands of aspiring screenwriters who visit daily and make it the most popular screenwriting site on the web.

The site's most popular feature, the "What I learned" section at the end of each review, was the main inspiration behind Scriptshadow Secrets, as Reeves saw how positively writers responded to quick context-relevant tips.

So I decided I wanted to be a screenwriter and instantly plummeted to the bottom of an abandoned mine shaft. What the hell was I doing? This book was like someone throwing me down first a flashlight so I could get my bearings, and then a rope to pull my terrified ass out of there.

Carson knows what he's talking about. Even better - his advice is so clear cut and specific he makes it so YOU know what he's talking about too. Speaking of mines, there's pure gold waiting at ScriptShadow. I've never seen an online community as supportive as this one.

Carson's crafted such an atmosphere of constructive feedback and good intentions that even a total amateur neurotic nutball like me feels confident submitting work for review. Not to mention there's even MORE of the great writing tips that had me tearing through this book so fast I bruised my Kindle finger.

One person found this helpful. The only reason why Oscar, Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award winning screenwriters have not yet thanked Carson Reeves during their acceptance speeches is because he is the champion of a new legion of writers.

I found Carson while scouring the internet for information about the "Wall Street 2" script before Wall Street 2 was released.

That search was my first foray into the world of screenwriting blogs, most of which were unfocused at best and self serving at worst. As a result, when I came across "Scriptshadow", I was taken aback I was impressed by the conversational style of Scriptshadow reviews a cadence that I would compare favorably to Roger Ebert's as well as the site's positivity. Unlike the way Scriptshadow has been characterized in other, lesser screenwriting blogs, I found each Scriptshadow script review to be thoughtful and inspiring.

I never got the impression that Carson sought out to trash a script or wallow in snark, even when some writers made that inclination very tempting. The key component of each review was the takeaway. What can we learn, even from a script that didn't quite work? What can a novice writer learn from a script that is so close to perfection that it seems that no writer could ever match it?

With that in mind, "Scriptshadow Secrets" is the ideal compliment to Carson's ongoing work.

The book provides lessons from a storytelling perspective. Taken as a whole, a writer will read the book and realize that writing a good script takes more skill than simply draping scenes onto a "hook" or concept; it is a process in which each scene should unfold in organic service to the story in its entirety.

Any serious writer who purchases "Scriptshadow Secrets" will quickly find himself or herself relying upon it for motivation and guidance. After you finish it, you will be ready to write your own chapters. And, I'm sure, nothing would make Carson happier. Here's what hooked me into Scriptshadow Secrets almost immediately: Ideally, unproduced screenplays that have sold.
