Diane Levy uses her approach to parenting in the context of modern society. In many families both parents work, and many parents work and raise children single-handedly; in order to establish a good family structure clear boundaries must exist between parent and child.
She discusses specific issues, such as sibling rivalry, bullying and nasty habits. Readers may dip into the book to find immediate help for problems with sleeping, eating and toilet training. Sex education and strategies for coping with teenagers are also covered; with the last part of the book summing up simple parenting strategies.

After reading a short way into the first few chapters, I started to look at my own child with new eyes and more understanding for his personality.
I like the authors common-sense approach to problems and difficult situations, as she is kind and calm. The author gives frank examples from her own family and lessons she has learnt along the way. I feel this book will be one that I refer to over the years as my child reaches new stages. One person found this helpful. Great parenting book. Some really simple but effective ideas that have certainly worked for our family.
This is the manual that should come with toddlers, to take you through to teens. Entertaining writing, clear examples, and all the yes buts are answered. Diane's attitudes and techniques shaped the way I raise my children.
This minimalist, observing, supportive approach respects the child and the parent. I read it when my first child was two years old, and again with my second, gaining new perspective every time. Thank you Diane! Has some good ideas and advice but she talks alot about her own children which is quite boring and she contridicts herself in some places.
Also advocates locking children in their bedroom for time out. I have had this book for a couple of years now and it is my absolute favourite parenting book by far. I find the advice very clear and real. Diane's humourous style and wonderful 'warts and all' personal anecdotes are very encouraging. I recommend this to everyone I know.
