Every recipe we've tried has turned out beautifully and he loves to use it for ideas when he has an oddball ingredient. The only thing that might turn some people away from the book is the lack of illustrations or photos of ingredients and completed dishes. But I think the true keepers are the books that focus on the basics which based on single recipe appears to be the case here. Nothing really exotic, just basic, good ingredients treated with respect and yielding amazing results.

I remember seeing it on lots of bookshelves when I was young. What a coincidence since we live at opposite ends of the world. Enjoyed your review and personal reflections. That dish looks so simple but I am sure it tastes really really great. It kinda reminds me of another dish, except it had beef chunks in it. And it had lettuce in it. But all around same thing, clear broth and potatoes and meat.
