I started liking Luis Suarez at one of the most controversial moments of his career - when he stopped a certain goal while playing for his country, Uruguay in the quarter finals of the world cup It's obvious to his fans that he is an instinctive player.
But it's nice to get inside the head of a footballer. It's always better to know the background of your favourite player. It also explains how differently football is played across different countries in Europe. This book tells his side of the story for all the controversies surrounding him.
Some of his explanations sound plausible and some fall flat. It's hard to explain the biting incidents. When you are angry you can throw a punch, you may kick the person or you can do a head-butt, but biting anyone cannot be rationalised.
Stopping the ball with your hand can be an instinctive action. But the most controversial of all the controversies was the racist charge against him. It will never be clear what words were exchanged between Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez, but I don't think that Suarez is a racist.
I have seen that video many times and of the later hand-shake incident as well.
Its Evra who looks more dominating during the argument and in body language. Add to that the clout of Manchester United in the Premiere League, which was very influential in getting a long ban on Suarez. Suarez has flaws. He has been through a lot of controversies. And he has been come back strongly after each of them. This shows his character. You fall and you rise again. His first season at Barcelona was phenomenal. And I hope it continues Jan 05, Shirley rated it it was amazing.
YNWA Luis. Un joueur instinctif qui donne tout sur le terrain et cela quoi qu'il arrive. Je dois bien avouer, que maintenant, Luis, je t'aime encore plus qu'avant. Jan 14, Lembusora rated it liked it. Sid Lowe involved in writing this I guess. Easy to read for non-native english speaker. The story is good, yeah just good. I found Zlatan's is better than Suarez'.
Because I Am Zlatan is very good, I believe it influenced the opening of this book. It's similar. Suarez story is a love-driven one.
Had it not for Sofi, perhaps Suarez will only play in Uruguay, unable to made a move to europe let alone winning it's biggest tournament, the UCL.
So light, I can even finish reading this in less than a wee Sid Lowe involved in writing this I guess. So light, I can even finish reading this in less than a week. Worth to read, but not collecting one is fine I suppose.
Jan 17, Jaspreet Singh rated it it was amazing. The book was a very interesting read into the minds of one of the world's best forwards detailing his story from small towns in Uruguay to the Camp Nou. There are some very well written emotional chapters in this book about the tears after Crystal Palace, the bitings and then incident with Evra. The real gems are the sections on his interactions with his managers Martin Jol, Rodgers, van Basten , his teammates Glen Johnson!
Awesome book. If you are a big fan of Liverpool, Barca or just soccer then you should definitely read this one.
I liked it from the beginning to end. It tells how Suarez started in his native Uruguay and many other things related to soccer. Oct 11, Sulaiman rated it really liked it. Very honest in his biography and quite inspirational. Honest and Engaging It's more of a biography but Suarez writes his journey with honesty. Good book to communicate with the demons within us! I have enjoyed reading sporting autobiographies and this one is no different.
I always liked Suarez as a player. I gave his all as a Liverpool player and the fact that he loved the club comes out in this book. He does not talk about why he left Liverpool, and I wish he could have stayed another year. It was interesting but not the best autobiography I have read.
I can't always identify with him, we are from way to different backgrounds. The fact that English is not his first language may not have I have enjoyed reading sporting autobiographies and this one is no different. The fact that English is not his first language may not have helped this book.
I would have given him 3. I must have wondered hundreds of times over the years - What must be going on inside his head?
Fans and pundits have accepted that Every genius has a touch of madness, but this is a bit too much. Here is a world class player who is capable of terrorizing and destroying the best defense in the world - yet he will be remembered in the history as a racist who has bitten footballers on the field - THRICE!!!
Through all the ups and downs, and amidst the trophies, awards and humiliating bans, you get I must have wondered hundreds of times over the years - What must be going on inside his head? Through all the ups and downs, and amidst the trophies, awards and humiliating bans, you get a glimpse into what makes him tick. The insatiable hunger and the undying spirit just stand out! Oct 14, Huy Tran rated it really liked it.
Overall this is a good read, not only as a Liverpool or Suarez fan but also as a football fan. The one thing that i like about Suarez is his strong will to do anything to achieve his goals. We also make mistakes all the time and the important thing is how we get back on track to try to reach our goals. Oct 08, Hinay rated it really liked it. This was a very insightful read and I finished this book in no time. People have their stubborn, negative and narrow minded views about Suarez but this book will certainly change your perspective.
Some people are born extra hungry I guess!! He's had an interesting journey as a footballer but even as a child and teenager.
This is a very humbling and exciting read! Aug 06, Gayathiri Rajendran rated it really liked it. It was an excellent read overall. A quite refreshing read coming from the man himself. Not an Uruguayan, not a Liverpool or Ajax fan, but Suarez is one of the best of his time. Good story, a few aspects that I didn't know about him. Really enjoyed the book.
I had supporters writing to me to congratulate me on how I had played as their captain and I will always carry that in my heart. They sang my name from my first game, and they even sang it after I had left the club.
Another reason why the club will always be special to me is because of the way they treated my family. We loved living in Amsterdam. It was a big change from Groningen; it is a much more international city, and one that had a lot of tourists and much more going on. The club advised us that we should be careful when we were out and about — the sort of warning locals might give any young wide-eyed tourists in a big city — but we had a wonderful time.
Above all, that was because of the attitude of the people. The Amsterdam Arena is probably the best stadium I have played in. It has all the benefits of a modern stadium, but because of the supporters you can feel the history of the club when you play there. It makes me very proud to think that if those supporters were asked today about the top players that have played for the club they would include my name.
In fact, just having been part of Dutch football is incredibly special to me. If my Uruguayan roots taught me to never stop fighting on the pitch, then my Dutch education taught me to never stop thinking. Crossing the Line is out now in hardback and ebook.
