In the pdf link he is using the distance from the closest base. With regular 2x2 cross multiplication you have 4 multiplication steps and 3 addition steps to get the answer.
First you put the distance from the base, in this case , to the left of the multiplicand and multiplier.
Add or subtract, in this case subtract, from the number diagonally across. Either top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top you will get the same answer.
